Cuando el viernes por la mañana cogía el avión desde Madrid a Tánger, no me podía creer que en menos de tres horas iba a retroceder tanto en el tiempo. Mata es una experiencia difícil de describir que te remueve por dentro, llega hasta tu ser más primitivo y, sin duda, cambia tu manera de ver la vida.
Sobre el papel estamos ante un Festival Internacional Ecuestre, una competición de jinetes venidos de todo Marruecos por llevarse una muñeca que, si bien en la antiguedad les daba derecho a elegir esposa, ahora reciben dinero y trigo. Sin embargo Mata es muchísimo más que eso y uno se da cuenta nada más llegar. Para empezar te reciben hombres y mujeres vestidos con trajes típicos de la zona que, con sus cánticos ancestrales y gritos desesperados al cielo, te ponen la piel de gallina. El bullicio de gente alrededor es abrumador. Creedme, nadie te prepara para esta experiencia. Sólo tres horas antes estabas en la sala de espera de un aeropuerto internacional con aire acondicionado y un "cappuccino
to go" en la mano y ahora te encuentras entre todo tipo de olores, esquivando jinetes montando a pelo caballos semisalvajes, boñigas inesperadas por cualquier sitio por donde pisas y las miradas curiosas de las miles de personas que allí se han reunido. Todo es aparentemente caótico, pero es sólo un espejismo. Esta fiesta tiene más de 800 años y, aunque no lo parezca, todo está bajo control. Eso sí, la lucha por la muñeca es descarnada, ruda, sin control, con momentos de pura tensión que entiendes muy bien pues lo que está en cuestión es una competición salvaje por el honor. La batalla en la que se miden por igual valentía, inteligencia y audacia por hacerse con la muñeca y proclamarse como único vencedor.
Durante siglos, los hombres han protagonizado y siguen dominando esta competición, en la que en los últimos años consiguió “colarse” una amazona, convertida ya en todo un símbolo de Mata. Se llama Zohra y ahora, cumplidos ya los 60 años y retirada de las carreras, puedes verla paseando orgullosa sobre su caballo.
Como veis, Mata es mucho más que una competición hípica al uso, es un encuentro de culturas donde también se habla de paz y se promueve algo que, en estos tiempos, todos debemos practicar: el dialogo.
¿Y porqué debes venir al Festival Ecuestre de Mata la gran fiesta cultural de Marruecos?, pues ya lo ves; por ser un lugar único en el mundo al que querreis volver una y otra vez.
When I took the plane from Madrid to Tangier on Friday morning, I could not believe that in less than three hours I was going to go back so far in time. Mata is an experience difficult to describe that moves you from inside, touches your most primitive being and, without a doubt, it changes the way you look at life.
On paper we are at an International Equestrian Festival, a competition of riders from all over Morocco to win a doll that, in ancient times gave them the right to choose a wife, but now they receive money and wheat. However, Mata is much more than that and you realize it as soon as you arrive. You are welcomed by men and women dressed in typical costumes of the area who, with their ancestral chants and desperate cries to the sky, leave you with absolutely freezing skin. The hustle and bustle of people around is overwhelming. Believe me, no one prepares you for this experience. Only three hours earlier you were in an international airport lounge with air conditioning and a "cappuccino to go" in your hand and now you find yourself amidst all kinds of smells, dodging riders riding bareback on semi-wild horses, unexpected dung everywhere you step, and the curious stares of the thousands of people who have gathered there. Everything is apparently chaotic, but it is only a illusion. This ceremony is more than 800 years old and, although it may not seem so, everything is under control. Of course, the fight for the doll is raw, rough, uncontrolled, with moments of pure tension that you understand very well because what is at stake is a wild competition for honor, a battle in which the skill, courage, intelligence and audacity of the riders are measured to get the doll and proclaim themselves the only winner.
For centuries, men have dominated and are still dominating this competition, in which in recent years a female rider has managed to "sneak in" and has become a symbol of Mata. Her name is Zohra and now, now 60 years old and retired from racing, you can see her proudly riding her horse.
As you can see, the Mata International Equestrian Festival is much more than just an ordinary horse racing competition, it is a meeting of cultures where people also talk about peace and promote something that, in these times, we should all practice: dialogue.

¿QUÉ ES MATA?
Se trata de un evento hípico que se celebra cada año antes del verano cerca de Larache, en los campos de Beni Arouss. Esta patrocinado por el Rey Mohamed VI y organizado por los Baraka, importante familia del norte de Marruecos y descendientes del santo poeta sufí Moulay Abdeslam.
En 2010 Mohamed VI decidió impulsar y transformar en festival una tradición ancestral de los países árabes en la que jinetes de diferentes pueblos se baten al galope y a pelo de un modo salvaje por atrapar una muñeca de trapo realizada por las mujeres de la región. Antes, el ganador tenía derecho a elegir esposa en los poblados participantes, hoy en día el premio consiste en un cheque y trigo.
Hay un esfuerzo por parte de Mata de servir de puente cultural y social entre España y Marruecos, Europa y África. La fuerza del evento radica en su papel conciliador y muro de contención a radicalismos gracias al espíritu sufí inspirado por Moulay Abdeslam, cuya cripta se encuentra en las tierras de la familia. Mata es ya patrimonio de YCESCO y, además de contar con el patrocinio del Rey, cuenta con el apoyo de la UNESCO. Al evento acuden cada año representantes del gobierno alauita, embajadores y representantes de instituciones internacionales.
It is an equestrian event that takes place every year before the summer near Larache, in the fields of Beni Arouss. It is sponsored by King Mohamed VI and organized by the Baraka, an important family of northern Morocco and descendants of the Sufi poet saint Moulay Abdeslam.
In 2010 Mohamed VI decided to promote and transform into a festival an ancestral tradition of the Arab countries in which riders from different villages battle galloping and bareback in a wild way to catch a rag doll made by the women of the region. It used to be that the winner had the right to choose a wife in the participating villages, today the prize consists of a check and wheat.
Mata is making an effort to serve as a cultural and social bridge between Spain and Morocco, Europe and Africa. The strength of the event lies in its conciliatory role and retaining wall to radicalism thanks to the Sufi spirit inspired by Moulay Abdeslam, whose crypt is located on the family lands. Mata is now a YCESCO heritage site and, in addition to the patronage of the King, has the support of UNESCO. The event is attended every year by representatives of the Alawite government, ambassadors and representatives of international institutions.
¿QUÉ VAS A ENCONTRAR EN MATA?
Mata significa, “montar sin silla, a pelo” y es también el nombre de la muñeca de trapo por la que compiten en este concurso hípico, único en el mundo. Se supone que la carrera principal es el domingo por la tarde, pero ya desde el viernes hay tal bullicio y algarabía por toda la zona que es difícil saber si estas viendo un entrenamiento de jinetes o la competición pura y dura.
Al entrar veréis un enorme cartel de bienvenida que nos recuerda que estamos en un evento "patrimonio ancestral inmaterial y espacio cultural de la humanidad" donde todo el mundo es bienvenido, se honran las tradiciones y en que podréis moveros libremente por toda la zona para disfrutar de un espectaculo único en el mundo donde vuestra única preocupación será no pisar una "moñiga" de caballo (aunque me parece que eso será misión imposible)
Arranca el baile de los segadores, la ceremonia de la henna de las mujeres con su grito zaghareet y la presentación de las cuadrillas ecuestres ante la familia Baraka, y sus invitados, casi siempre ministros y embajadores europeos y árabes.
En el interior de una modesta casa de pueblo, un grupo de mujeres trajinan escogiendo telas, cintas e hilos de colores, a las órdenes de Hajda Fatima, la mujer que viste cada año a la muñeca de Mata; un trofeo de trapo tan preciado por estos lares como la copa más cara. Todos los jinetes proceden de seis tribus del norte de Marruecos. La competición es dura, se puede comprobar casi a pie de campo, y todos los años hay pequeños sustos que, dicen los jinetes, forma parte del encanto de Mata.
Antes, el ganador elegía esposa, ahora (menos mal) se lleva dinero y trigo.
Mata means, "to ride with no saddle, bareback" and is also the name of the rag doll for which they compete in this equestrian contest, unique in the world. The main race is supposed to be on Sunday afternoon, but from Friday onwards there is such a hustle and bustle all over the area that it is hard to tell if you are watching the riders training or the pure and simple competition.
As you enter you will see a huge welcome sign that reminds us that we are in an event "intangible ancestral heritage and cultural space of humanity" where everyone is welcome, traditions are honored and where you can move freely throughout the area to enjoy a unique show in the world where your only concern will be not to step on a horse " crumb" (although I think that will be mission impossible).
It starts the dance of the reapers, the henna ceremony of the women with their zaghareet cry and the presentation of the equestrian teams before the Baraka family, and their guests, almost always ministers and European and Arab ambassadors.
Inside a humble village house, a group of women are busy choosing fabrics, ribbons and colored threads, under the orders of Hajda Fatima, the woman who dresses the Mata doll every year; a rag trophy as prized in these parts as the most expensive cup. All the riders come from six tribes in northern Morocco. The competition is tough, you can see it almost on the ground, and every year there are little scares that, say the riders, are part of the charm of Mata.
Before, the winner used to get to choose a wife, now (thank goodness) he gets money and wheat.
CONSEJOS PRACTICOS
Mata es un festival hípico único en el mundo que se remonta a más de 8 siglos por lo que no esperes nada parecido las carreras de Ascot, en Gran Bretaña. Esto es mucho más ancestral. Toma nota de estos consejos antes de ir a los campos de Beni Arous. Creo que me lo agradecerás.
Por la zona no hay hoteles, apartamentos turísticos ni nada remotamente parecido por lo que tendréis que hospedaros en Tánger, Larache o Tetuán, tres ciudades con mucho que ver, a poco más de una hora de la zona.
No hay autobuses regulares que vayan a Mata. Es mejor cojer un taxi o alquilar un coche. Allí no tendréis problemas de aparcamiento.
La entrada es gratuita. Podréis disfrutar de las carreras, ver espectáculos de intercambio cultural, comprar en un mercado productos locales y tomaros algo. Los precios son muy baratos en comparación con cualquier país europeo.
Tened en cuenta que estamos en pleno campo. Suelo de tierra y rodeados de caballos...por lo que vuestra mayor preocupación será no pisar boñigas. Traeros deportivas o botas nada de zapatos de vestir.
Las temperaturas cambian mucho a lo largo del día. Máximas de 24 grados y mínimas de 12 ó 13, por lo que no olvidéis una chaqueta ligera o un jersey para la tarde-noche.
También os recomiendo estar atentos a la ceremonia de la henna de las mujeres, se tatúan y confeccionan la muñeca por la que pelearán los jinetes.
Pasead por las colinas, veréis qué jaimas tan maravillosas tienen por caballerizas y disfrutad de unas estampas increíbles y una luz soberbia para la cámara.
Lo último (pero no menos importante): No olvidéis un paquetito de Kleenex, por si las moscas (ya me entendeis)
Mata is a unique equestrian festival in the world that dates back more than 8 centuries so don't expect anything like the Ascot races in Great Britain. This is much more traditional. Please take note of these tips before going to the Beni Arous fields. I think you will thank me.
There are no hotels, tourist apartments or anything remotely similar in the area so you will have to stay in Tangier, Larache or Tetouan, three cities with a lot to see, just over an hour from the area.
There are no regular buses to Mata. It is better to take a cab or rent a car. There you will have no parking problems.
Admission is free. You can enjoy the races, watch cultural exchange shows, buy local products in a market and have a drink. The prices are very cheap compared to any European country.
Keep in mind that we are in the countryside. Dirt floor and surrounded by horses...so your main concern will be not to step on dung. Bring sneakers or boots, no dress shoes.
Temperatures change a lot throughout the day. Highs of 24 degrees and lows of 12 or 13, so do not forget a light jacket or sweater for the afternoon-evening.
I also recommend you to be attentive to the henna ceremony of the women, they tattoo themselves and make the doll for which the horsemen will fight.
Take a walk through the hills, see what wonderful tents they have for stables and enjoy some incredible pictures and a superb light for the camera.
Last but not least: Don't forget a packet of Kleenex, just in case (you know what I mean).
